I strongly feel that the role is often misunderstood even today. Many product managers and leaders focus on a checklist of tasks, rather than the essence of product management.
In this guide, I break product management into the 4 most basic (yet critical) phases:
- Planning
- Alignment
- Execution
- Measuring and Improving
Each phase has a few deliverables and outcomes. And the product manager's responsibility is to ensure that the deliverables are of high quality and delivered on time.
Great PMs spend time understanding the essence, need, and nuances of each phase and deliverable. Then, they create action items. which help them do the job. Mediocre PMs just keep going through the motions without understanding why they're doing what they're doing.
